For carved candles the best wax is a paraffin wax that has good flexibility and a melting point between 135F and 145F. Flexibility means that slices of the wax can be bent, twisted, and stretched without breaking. If the wax does not have good flexibility, adding microwax (also called microcrystalline wax) can help. First try adding one-half oz of microwax to 4 pounds of the paraffin wax. If the flexibility is not improved enough, add more microwax… but do not add more than one oz total per 4 pounds of the paraffin wax. If you add too much microwax the candle wax becomes too sticky to carve well. The melting point of wax determines how long wax stays soft enough for the carver to finish carving. If the melting point is too high the candle cools too quickly. If the melting point is too low the candle can deform in a very warm room or in transit.
